The story

While many modern teas are produced for volume, Uji’s hojicha remains grounded in tradition, emphasizing balance, craftsmanship, and a naturally low-caffeine profile.

Deeply tied to Kyoto’s tea culture, hojicha has long been enjoyed for its soothing character and everyday elegance. The misty hills of Uji provide ideal conditions for growing leaves that roast beautifully, resulting in a cup that is gentle, nuanced, and effortlessly comforting.

Today, hojicha continues to be cherished as a “Kyoto-born” classic - beloved for its nostalgic warmth, its versatility, and its ability to ease the senses with every sip.

Preparation

Our Hojicha is exceptionally smooth and comforting when prepared as a latte - a creamy, aromatic blend that highlights its roasted caramel notes, making it a perfect replacement for coffee.

How to Prepare (Hojicha Latte)

2g–3g (about 1–1.5 tsp) hojicha powder
20–30 ml water at 80–85°C (176–185°F)
150–200 ml milk of choice
A fine mesh sifter
A chawan or small bowl
A chasen (bamboo whisk) or milk frother

Steps

1. Sift 2–3g of hojicha powder into your bowl to prevent clumping.
2. Add a splash of hot water and whisk until smooth and lump-free.
3. Pour the hojicha concentrate over the milk and ice if desired and stir gently to combine.
4. Sip slowly, enjoying the roasted, cozy aroma of your hojicha latte.

Storage

Unopened hojicha stays fresh for up to 1 year when stored properly.

Once opened, we recommend enjoying it within 3-4 months to preserve its aroma and roasted depth.

Store your hojicha in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from heat, light, and humidity. Avoid refrigeration to maintain its delicate roasted notes.
